Sound and its Effect on our Brainwaves

With the help of sound, we are able to change our brain waves. Brain waves are patterns of electrical activity in the brain generated by synchronised electrical impulses when neurons communicate with each other.

The more we are involved in thinking and analysing processes, the higher and faster these waves become. At first glance, this is not a problem, but just as we need balance in every area of our lives, so does our brain.

Most of us live most of our lives in a state where our brain waves are mainly in beta - excited, alert, focused, but also somewhat stressed.

When we relax, meditate, or sleep, we change our brainwave frequency. This means that electrical activity in the brain decreases, and this can lead to a significant increase in feel-good chemicals such as endorphins and dopamine. When meditating in general, we focus on something, such as our breath, a candle flame, or a mantra. In this way, we manage to slow down our electrical patterns in the brain and stabilise the amplitude of our brain waves in the alpha, theta or even delta wave range.

Brain wave patterns are generally categorised as follows:

- Gamma brainwaves - Frequency: 32 - 100 Hz.

Associated condition: Increased cognition, learning and problem-solving tasks.

- Beta brainwaves - Frequency: 13-32 Hz

Associated condition: normal waking consciousness, active thinking as well as being stressed.

- Alpha brainwaves - Frequency: 8-13 Hz

Associated state: physically and mentally relaxed.

- Theta brainwaves - Frequency: 4-8 Hz

Associated state: creativity, insight, deep meditation, healing and reduced consciousness.

- Delta brainwaves - Frequency: 0.5-4 Hz

Associated state: deep and dreamless sleep

In a Sound Bath meditation, the same thing happens as in a silent mediation, with the advantage that we achieve a brainwave shift much sooner and easier than without sound.

Through sound, we can not only slow down our brainwaves, but also change our heartbeat and breathing. All together, this contributes to our physical, emotional and spiritual health.

So, a treatment with sound is an effective way to shift our brainwaves. This can be done in a one-to-one treatment or during a sound bath using special instruments such as the Akasha Bowls® quartz crystal singing bowls. Gongs, drums or tuning forks can also be used to change our brain frequency and increase our well-being. If you want to know which brain waves we enter into exactly and what a brainwave shift also does physiologically in our bodies you should definitely check out one of our courses in the Sound Medicine Institute Germany!
